My art is inextricably linked with
my personal life. The French artist Sophie Calle
once said, “I live happy events and I exploit
unhappy ones.” Art is an opportunity for
me to share selected pieces of my world. Moments
with which I have an emotional connection tend
to stand out most, and those become the basis
for my work.
Something of a pack-rat, I collect personal souvenirs:
photos, journals, old day-timers… and gifts
– gifts that have personal meaning, things
that have no practical use, but which I don’t
dare throw out. A decorative plate, an unread
book, various toys; all objects of questionable
value whose real significance lies in their generosity
and thoughtfulness, the object itself only a vessel.
In a gesture intended as both embracing and cathartic,
I’ve recreated these objects and again offer
them as vehicles for a generosity of spirit.
